Why Wait for FREEDOM? Rethinking Traditional Retirement

Picture this: you’re standing at the edge of the ocean, the salty breeze wrapping around you like a soft, familiar blanket. The waves roll in, unbothered by the concept of “perfect timing.” They crash when they’re ready—unapologetic, relentless, free. Watching them, you realise something: the tide doesn’t wait for anyone. So, why are we waiting decades to live the life we truly want?

Somewhere along the way, society handed us a script. It said: “Work hard, save harder, and maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to enjoy your life... when you’re 65.” Or is it 67 now? Honestly, I’ve lost track. And honestly—who wrote this script? Did they even have our best interests at heart, or were they just winging it, hoping we wouldn’t notice?

Now, I’ll admit, this is the part where I tend to get carried away. I know, I know—I’m a chatterbox. But can you blame me? I care so much about helping you see this differently that I just can’t shut up about it. (I’ll try not to go on forever, though. Pinky promise.)

Here’s the thing: life doesn’t begin at “retirement age.” Freedom isn’t some far-off milestone. It’s not a number on a calendar or a reward we unlock after decades of grinding away. What if I told you that freedom—the real, soul-deep kind—is already within reach?

The World’s Worst Trade Deal

Think about it. They told us to give away our best years—the ones when we’re curious, vibrant, and (hopefully) still have good knees—in exchange for a few slow ones. Does that really sound like a good deal to you?

Imagine this instead: it’s a random Tuesday morning. The kettle hums in the background as you pour your coffee. The day stretches out ahead of you, gloriously empty—or full of whatever you choose to fill it with. There’s no boss breathing down your neck, no rigid schedule dictating your every move. Just freedom.

“Later” is a dangerous word. It whispers, “Not now. Just wait.” But what if later never comes? What if we’re putting off joy, exploration, and fulfilment for a chapter that may not unfold the way we’re imagining?

The Siren Song of “Later”

“Later” is sneaky. It convinces us there’s an endless amount of time, that opportunities will wait patiently for us to be ready. But life doesn’t work like that. Priorities shift, circumstances change, and sometimes, that perfect moment we’ve been holding out for slips through our fingers without warning. It’s not just about missing out on a holiday we’ve always dreamt of or postponing that phone call to someone we care about. It’s about the cumulative weight of all those “laters” that never turn into “nows”.

Think about how often we say, “I’ll start next week,” or “I’ll have more time when things settle down.” But does life ever truly settle down? There’s always a deadline, a distraction, or a new obstacle waiting to fill the space we thought we’d have. Meanwhile, the things that light us up – spending time with loved ones, pursuing passions, or simply taking a moment to breathe – get pushed further and further into the background.

The pain of “later” is in its deceit. It feels harmless in the moment, but it can compound into regret over time. Imagine the heartbreak of realising you never wrote that book, learned that skill, or told someone how much they meant to you. The years can slip by so quietly that the dreams we keep postponing start to feel like distant memories instead of achievable realities.

And let’s not forget the toll it takes on our relationships. How many times have we told a friend or family member, “We’ll catch up soon,” only for weeks, months, or even years to pass? How often do we assume the people we care about will always be there, until one day, they’re not? “Later” robs us of connection, of shared moments that can never be replicated.

The tragedy of “later” is that it promises us comfort now in exchange for a future that may never align the way we hope. It asks us to trade the present for an uncertain tomorrow, and in doing so, it keeps us from fully living. It’s a thief dressed as a friend, and it’s time we stopped letting it steal from us.

Rewriting the Script

The truth is, retirement is a relic of the 20th century. You, my friend, are a 21st-century woman. You don’t have to let outdated timelines define your life.

What if, instead of chasing some distant finish line, you started living your freedom now? What if your passion projects could pay the bills? Or your mornings could be slow and sacred, filled with the sound of birdsong instead of the blaring alarm clock?

The traditional retirement plan? It’s like an old flip phone gathering dust in a drawer—outdated, clunky, and honestly, not very useful anymore. You deserve an upgrade. Something bold. Something vibrant. Something that makes you feel alive.

One Bold Decision Away

Let’s be real: making a change like this isn’t easy. It’s normal to have second thoughts. (I mean, second-guessing yourself is as natural as kookaburras laughing at dawn. Trust me, I’ve been there.) But here’s the thing: your freedom isn’t 20 years away. It’s closer than you think. It’s a plan, a pivot, and one brave, beautiful decision away.

Forget the beige idea of “retirement.” Let’s call it what it really is—freedom. And freedom doesn’t have to wait.

Stop looking at the calendar. Start looking inside. What do you hope for? What do you dream about when no one’s watching? What would your life look like if you gave yourself permission to live, not someday, but right now?

Your Permission Slip

So, here it is: your permission slip to stop waiting. To stop letting someone else’s timeline dictate your life. You’ve already conquered so much. Why let a random number on a calendar decide when it’s finally your turn to enjoy what you’ve built?

The world doesn’t wait for you to turn 65 to show you its wonders. The tide doesn’t pause for “perfect timing.” And your freedom? It’s not a decade or two away—it’s right here, waiting for you to claim it.

Your life can be painted in bold, vibrant strokes. You can create, earn, and live on your terms. You can craft a life you love, not later, but now.

So, what do you say? Let’s rewrite the script together. Let’s stop waiting. Let’s start living.
